Open Cell vs. Closed Cell Spray Foam in Birmingham, AL: Which Do You Need?

Birmingham Quality Spray Foam installs both, and the choice is genuinely job-specific rather than one being better than the other.

Closed-cell is denser. It delivers roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch, resists moisture, and adds structural rigidity. It costs $2.50 to $5.50 per square foot here.

Open-cell is lighter and more expansive. It delivers roughly R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch, is permeable to moisture, and is an excellent air seal and sound absorber. It costs $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot.

The deciding factors are usually cavity depth, whether the area gets wet, and whether moisture needs to be able to move through the assembly. Below is how each behaves and which areas of a Birmingham house suit which.

Why Choose Birmingham Quality Spray Foam?

Open Cell vs. Closed Cell in Birmingham, AL

The Core Difference

In closed-cell foam the cells are sealed and packed tightly, filled with a gas that insulates better than air. That density is where the higher R-value, the moisture resistance and the rigidity all come from.

In open-cell foam the cells are broken and filled with air. It expands far more during application, filling irregular cavities thoroughly, and it stays soft and permeable.

Everything else follows from that one structural difference.

R-Value and Cavity Depth

  • Closed-cell — roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch
  • Open-cell — roughly R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch

This matters most when the cavity depth is fixed. A 2x4 wall gives you about three and a half inches. Filled with closed-cell that is around R-21; filled with open-cell it is around R-13.

So in a shallow cavity where you need a higher R-value, closed-cell is not a preference, it is the only way to get there. In a deep cavity where there is room to add inches, open-cell often reaches the same number for less money.

Moisture

Closed-cell resists water and at sufficient thickness acts as a vapour retarder. That makes it the right answer anywhere moisture is a live concern — crawl spaces, rim joists, basement walls, anywhere in contact with or close to the ground.

Open-cell is permeable. Moisture moves through it, which is a problem in the wrong place and an advantage in the right one, because an assembly that can dry is more forgiving than one that traps water on the wrong side.

In Birmingham humidity this is the question that most often settles the choice, and it is why our crawl space work is overwhelmingly closed-cell.

Air Sealing and Sound

Both seal air well, which is where most of the real-world performance gain comes from regardless of R-value.

Open-cell has an advantage on sound. Its softer, more open structure absorbs airborne noise better, which is why it is often chosen for interior walls between rooms, media rooms and floors between storeys.

It also expands more aggressively, so it fills awkward and irregular cavities more completely — useful in older houses where framing is not uniform.

Structure and Weight

Closed-cell adds meaningful rigidity to a wall assembly. That is a genuine benefit on metal buildings, pole barns and anywhere racking strength is useful — see our garage, pole barn and metal building page.

It is also heavier, which is occasionally a consideration on an underbuilt roof deck.

Which Area Gets Which

  • Crawl space — closed-cell, for the moisture resistance
  • Rim joists — closed-cell
  • Basement walls — closed-cell
  • Attic roof deck — either, depending on the assembly and the budget
  • Exterior walls in a shallow cavity — closed-cell to reach the R-value
  • Exterior walls with depth available — open-cell is often the better value
  • Interior walls for sound — open-cell
  • Metal buildings — closed-cell

Plenty of houses end up with both, and that is not a compromise — it is specifying each area for what it actually needs.

Cost in Practice

On the per-square-foot figures, closed-cell runs roughly $1 more per square foot at the low end and $2 more at the high end. Across a whole house that is a real number.

But comparing per square foot alone is misleading if the R-value targets differ. The fair comparison is cost to reach a given R-value in a given cavity, and on that basis the gap narrows considerably — and in shallow cavities it reverses.

Our cost breakdown covers pricing by area of the house.
